About HDBS

In 1995, A group of Indian Hindu Houston community leaders came up with a vision of a temple cum community center, mainly supported by the devotees, with roots in Bengal. Goal was to serve the greater Hindu and Indian community. With enthusiastic support, in 1996, the Bengali community successfully hosted the North American Bengali Conference. Houston Bengalis became confident that they could mobilize, raise funds and build the temple of their dream.

What followed over the next four years was constant fund-raising, making pitches, developing plans and progressing towards the dream. Finally, the land was bought in August of 1997. Once enough funds were raised, in 1999, Bhith Puja was performed and temple construction started. The temple of our dreams, the abode of Maa Durga, was opened in September 2000 and appropriately, the very first Durga Puja was performed starting 30th September 2000.

From those humble beginnings, Durga Bari has evolved into the premier temple and community center in Houston, serving a multitude of people. Volunteers, trustees and executive boards have contributed significant amount of money and volunteer hours to nurture our temple of our dreams.

The Houston Durga Bari Society is dedicated to providing a safe and spiritual haven for all members of our community.
