Summer Camp 2019

Venue: HDBS Date August 10-11 2019 Time: 9/4/19 10:00 am - 9/4/19 9:00 pm Hosted By: HDBS

Houston Durgabari organized a two-day Summer Camp for youth during Aug 11 and 12, 2019. With a humble beginning of the camp in 2004, this year saw the participation by 32 children from seven to 18 years of age. The camp has two main objectives – (1) to develop a sense of belonging and bonding among children of similar background, and (2) to impart basics of Indian history, religion, culture, and contributions to science and technology. To achieve these objectives, each day program is designed to have a proper balance of knowledge sessions, team sports, group projects, and temple services.

In the interactive session, children learnt about the process of applying for college admissions and scholarships from a recent High School graduate. A senior researcher and faculty from M.D. Anderson Cancer Center talked about managing post-college life and career. A lecture-cum-demonstration session on Indian Classical Music and Dance, entirely managed by senior participants, was a great success. In short period of time, the children learned dance good enough to perform at the stage.

Kabaddi was the most popular game. This year, children also played kho kho, another team sport. A few participants tried their hands at painting. Children practiced yogaasan under a highly skilled yoga teacher. The grand finale was a quiz competition where children demonstrated their knowledge and won various prizes.

A special feature of this year’s camp was a project to create Janmashtami model inside the temple where children built a river channel with water falls. And finally, since it was an overnight camp, children enjoyed bonfire, night sports, and expedition.
